In 2000, Alan, along with friend and fellow foodie/baseball fan, Tony Smith, established Tafapolsky & Smith LLP in San Francisco and Los Angeles. An in-demand author, speaker and teacher, Alan is recognized as an expert on the intersection of corporate law and immigration law, specializing in M&A consequences of immigration; entrepreneurs and immigration; and defending companies in immigration compliance related investigations of these subjects.
Early in his career, while speaking on an immigration compliance panel, Alan Tafapolsky met and befriended a San Diego-based lawyer, Sharon Mehlman, and a mutual respect grew between Ms. Mehlman and the lawyers at Tafapolsky & Smith. Mr. Tafapolsky and Mr. Smith were ecstatic when Ms. Mehlman combined with them to form the firm of Tafapolsky, Smith, Mehlman LLP in 2018.
Alan is an enthusiastic believer in balance, harmony, and walking slowly while thinking quickly. He is passionate about the role immigrants play in our economy. He is equally passionate about his baseball team, the Boston Red Sox. He has a BA with Distinction in Anthropology from Connecticut College and graduate degrees in Law & Diplomacy, Law, and Labor Law from Tufts University’s Fletcher School, the University of Wisconsin, and Georgetown University. In his free time, Alan wonders where all the free time went, but enjoys managing his son’s baseball team, going out to eat, music, and biking. He loves his wife Randi and two kids Nina & Alex, and Nikko their Portuguese Water Dog.
